Back to School Felt Storage Baskets with Kunin

Sharing is caring!

Organizing never looked so good!  Create these DIY Back to School Felt Storage Baskets with my favorite Kunin Premium Felt and some embroidery floss!  Using just one sheet of Kunin Felt for each basket, this trio went together in just under an hour with the classic blanket stitch.

Here's how to make Back to School Felt Storage Baskets:

.

STEP ONE

Measure 4″ in from all four edges of the Kunin Premium™ Felt 12″ by 18″ Craft Cut, creating a grid.

STEP TWO

Cut out the four squares at the four corners of the felt.  I always make sure that I sharpen my scissors each time I cut felt or fabric.

STEP THREE

Thread the embroidery needle with all six strands of embroidery floss (yarn or ribbon would work as well) and then knot the end.  Pinch corner seam together, lining up the side edges as well as the top edges.  Pull the needle through the base of the seam and create one looped stitch.

STEP FOUR

Sew a blanket stitch up each of the four seams.  The stitches will be on the outside of the storage baskets to create a fun accent and pop of color.

STEP FIVE

To finish the top edge, sew two to three basic loop stitches and then insert the needle just through one layer of felt.  With the needle on the inside of the basket, sew through several stitches, pull the thread through, and cut the end of the floss.  The tail will disappear into the seam of the basket.

STEP SIX

To create smaller baskets, first, create a 12″ by 12″ square of felt and then, second, measure in 4″ on all four sides.  Repeat sewing steps above to finish the felt storage baskets, using different colors of embroidery floss on each basket.

I created these Felt Storage Baskets for my niece, so she could organize her desk area as she heads Back to School in just a few short weeks.  She'll be a Sophomore in High School (how did that happen?) and is redecorating her entire room to make it more “sophisticated” (her words!)
