Vertical Herb Garden on a Fence
STEP ONE
To begin the herb garden, remove the labels from the cans, then wash and dry thoroughly. Basecoat each can with DecoArt® Patio Paint Outdoor™ in Cloud White using a flat paintbrush. Let dry and apply a second coat if necessary. The white basecoat will allow the bright topcoat colors to really pop! Patio Paint Outdoor has a superior flow and is self-leveling, so it will dry smooth.

STEP TWO
Once the white basecoat is dry, apply one coat of DecoArt® Patio Paint Outdoor™ in different colors on each can. I used Geranium Red, Azalea, Pumpkin, Sunshine Yellow, Apple Green, Blue Bahama, Desert Turquoise, Blue Jay, and Petunia Purple to each a wonderful rainbow! Let dry and apply a second coat if necessary. Use a paper plate or palette paper to organize the paint colors.

STEP THREE
Using a drill and drill bit create a hole in the bottom center of each can for drainage. Drill a second hole at the back top edge of each recycled can to hang it.

STEP FOUR
Attach the recycled cans to the front porch fence using the vertical pickets and the horizontal bracing as guides.

Drill a small pilot hole into the wood, then insert an exterior screw into the hole and screw into the wooden fence picket. I did a grid in rainbow order, three cans wide by three cans tall using the colors red through pink.

STEP FIVE
Remove each herb plant from its pot, squeeze the dirt and roots a bit to break them up, and then insert them into each recycled can. Press dirt down to secure the plant.

I loved your bright colors. It is a great solution especially if space is limited, too. My yard is infested with slugs and they devour basil planted in the ground. Growing it in a pot on the side of my house is the ONLY way I have been able to grow it! Yeah, I know putting out saucers of beer for the slugs to drown in works. BUT here, it generally rains the next day; I am left with watered down beer and no dead slugs!
Love the bright colors, Beth! Thanks for sharing at Vintage Charm–pinned!
