Good morning, y’all! I am super excited to share my fun and funky emoji pinata gift box project today! I was inspired by the 😜 winky eye, tongue out “just kidding” emoji. Which I have to say, is my go-to emoji, because I am a BIG jokester!

Create a DIY Emoji Pinata Gift Box
Piñatas are tons of fun for special occasions like birthdays, but I always feel bad that the piñata gets whacked and thrown away. So, here is a piñata that you can keep! Place some candy (and a gift card) inside for a super fun way to give to that special birthday boy or girl!
Here's what you need to make an Emoji Pinata Gift Box:
- Paper Mache Box – 6″ Round
- Yellow Tissue Paper
- Tombow MONO Adhesive+ Runner
- Cardstock – White, Black, and Pink
- Tombow Xtreme Permanent Adhesive
- Scissors
- Tombow MONO Drawing Pencil
- DecoArt Americana Acrylic – Bright Yellow
- DecoArt Paintbrush – 1″ Angle
- Ruler
Here's how to make an Emoji Pinata Gift Box:
STEP ONE – PAINTING
Let’s jump right in and start with a 6” round paper mache box, yellow tissue paper, and @tombowusa MONO Adhesive+. Basecoat the outside of the paper mache box with bright yellow acrylic craft paint.

STEP TWO – CUTTING
Layer 4 sheets of tissue paper on a self-healing mat and cut 1.5-inch strips with a metal ruler and craft knife. You’ll need 6-7 sets of strips in total. Now, this part is a bit time consuming, but well worth the investment!

STEP THREE – LAYERING
Lay tissue paper strips out, apply MONO Adhesive+ across the top edge and layer a second strip on top. Continue to layer adhesive, third strip, adhesive and fourth strip.

Repeat with the other sets of strips. This is what each strip should look like…

Once the paper mache box is dry, place the lid on the box and draw a line around the circumference of the box with Tombow MONO Drawing Pencil 3H grade.

STEP FOUR – FRINGING
Grab your scissors and let’s get to the fringing! At the open end, fringe each 4 layer strip of yellow tissue paper with scissors.

STEP FIVE – EMOJI ASSEMBLY
Apply a line of Tombow Xtreme Adhesive to the side of the paper mache box. Attach a fringed strip of tissue paper at the pencil line, then trim the excess with scissors. Repeat around the entire outside of the box, lifting up the first piece of fringe to apply the last underneath.

STEP SIX – ATTACHING FRINGE
Apply fringe in the same layering fashion to the top of the lid of the box.

For the final strip at the top, apply a line of Tombow Xtreme Adhesive, fold in half, apply another line of adhesive and attach to the top of the box.

Flip box over and trim the excess with scissors.

STEP SEVEN – FINISHING
Apply a line of Tombow Xtreme Adhesive to the side of the paper mache box lid. Attach a fringed strip of tissue paper at the edge, then trim the excess with scissors.

STEP EIGHT – CREATING EMOJI FEATURES
Easy as 1, 2, 3 with some pink, white and black cardstock and the Tombow Xtreme Adhesive.

Remember, when using the Tombow Xtreme to roll to apply, then swipe the tip to the side for a clean application. It’s 5 times stronger than traditional adhesive runners and it is way more flexible and easy to use than other double-sided tapes!
