• DecoArt Designer's Brush Set
• Natural Jute Twine – Dollar Tree
• Wooden Stars – Dollar Tree
• Glue Gun and Glue Sticks – Dollar Tree
• Scissors – I love my Fiskars!
• Pencil
• Ruler

Here's how to create a DIY Recycled Cork American Flag:

STEP ONE

To begin the Recycled Wine Cork American Flag, gather all supplies. Lay out 35 corks on your work surface in a rectangle. If you don't have enough wine corks saved up, these are pretty inexpensive. Line up 7 rows tall and 5 columns wide. Separate the corks for painting; 16 Santa Red, 13 Titanium White, and 6 Victorian Blue. This project can be scaled up or down to create the perfect size flag for your home décor.

STEP TWO

Basecoat the 16 wine corks with Santa Red Americana acrylic craft paint. Make the coat loose, so that the printing on the cork shows through for added interest. Loosely basecoat the 13 wine corks with Titanium White acrylic craft paint. Add some water to the paint, so that the printing on the cork shows through for added interest. Basecoat the 6 wine corks with Victorian Blue Americana acrylic craft paint. Make the coat loose, so that the printing on the cork shows through for added interest. Set all corks aside to dry, and don't forget to paint the ends.

STEP THREE

Loosely basecoat 3 wooden stars with Americana Titanium White, allowing some of the wood to show through. Measure a piece of recycled cardboard 6″ tall by 9″ wide. I always keep the backer boards from scrapbook paper pads and legal pads for use in my crafting, but a cardboard box would work as well. Cut the rectangle out with scissors.

STEP FOUR

Starting at the bottom, attach 5 red corks in a row using a glue gun and glue sticks. Add a row of 5 white corks, then alternate red and white until the flag has four red stripes and three white stripes. I like for a flag project to start and end with a red stripe at the top and bottom. NOTE: You can use liquid craft glue for this project, but you will have to wait for it to dry. Add the six blue corks to the top left-hand corner of the flag to represent the field of stars. Since the corks are not all the same size, trim any excess cardboard from the sides, top, and bottom with scissors.

STEP FIVE

To complete the Recycled Wine Cork Ameican Flag, measure and cut a 12” length of natural jute twine. Flip the flag over on your work surface and attach the twine hanger to the top right-hand and top left-hand corners with a glue gun and glue sticks. Using a paintbrush and a dabbing motion, add the DecoArt Galaxy Glitter Clear Ice Comet to the three wooden stars to add some additional sparkle to those stars and stripes. Dabbing this heavily-loaded glitter acrylic medium onto the wooden craft stars allows for maximum coverage. Set aside to allow the glitter to dry.
