Create a Vintage Ruler American Flag Door Hanger to welcome guests and celebrate all Summer long. Just a few simple supplies from the hardware store and my favorite DecoArt paints are needed to complete this patriotic home decor. Perfect to decorate the front door or gate and welcome guests. I love to keep my patriotic decor up year-round to show my love of the stars and stripes. The folding ruler I used for this project belonged to my grandpop and I loved playing with it when I was a kid.

Here's what you need to make a Flag from Yardsticks:
- Framed Wooden Sign Small Square from Walnut Hollow
- Americana Acrylics by DecoArt in Country Red, Dark Chocolate and Titanium White
- Staining Antiquing Medium from DecoArt
- Americana Decor 1″ Angle Paintbrush
- Tombow MONO Multi Liquid Glue
- Wooden Yardsticks (5)
- Vintage Folding Ruler
- Pencil, Ruler, Eye Hooks (10), Paper Towels, Scrap of Denim, Scissors, Sanding Block, Hand Drill, Needle Nose Pliers
Here's how to make a Yardstick Flag:
STEP ONE
To begin the Vintage Ruler Flag project, sand all surfaces of the wooden sign and yardsticks. I love to use a foam sanding block for projects like this because it is easy on the hands and gets in to all the small areas.
Measure and mark the center of each yardstick and then mark five points across the center bottom edge of the small sign with a pencil. Drill a pilot hole with the hand drill and then screw in an eye hook. Shape folding ruler into a five-pointed star.
STEP TWO
Apply a wash coat of Titanium White on all four sides of two yardsticks, using equal parts paint and water. Wipe off any excess paint with a paper towel, set aside to dry.
Apply a wash coat of Country Red on all four sides of three yardsticks, using equal parts paint and water. Wipe off any excess paint with a paper towel, set aside to dry.
Apply a wash coat of Dark Chocolate on all four sides of the small wooden sign, using equal parts paint and water. Wipe off any excess paint with a paper towel, set aside to dry. I love how this gives the look of a stain without the mess!
STEP THREE
Antique the five yardsticks with equal parts Staining Medium and Dark Chocolate paint. Apply with a paintbrush and then wipe off any excess paint with a paper towel. Set aside to dry.
STEP FOUR
Cut a square of denim to fit inside the wooden sign and attach with Glue. Once dry, adhere the folding ruler star to the wooden sign.
STEP FIVE
To finish the Vintage Ruler American Flag Wall Hanging, use the needle-nose pliers to open the eye hooks on each of the five yardsticks. Thread the open eye hooks through the closed eye hooks on the wooden sign and then close the open eye hooks with needle-nose pliers. Heavy-duty needle-nose pliers will be needed for this step instead of needle-nose pliers from the craft store.

I’m thinking I might use paint instead of the denim since our door is exposed to the elements.
