Paint Pour American Flag with DecoArt

Sharing is caring!

Good Morning Y’all!  Today I am sharing my Paint Pour American Flag which is perfect for patriotic home decor. In honor of Independence Day, I am featuring Flag and Patriotic-inspired crafts all week!  Today I am going to share my tutorial on paint pouring.  I tried something new creating stars and stripes patterns within the pour, so let’s get going and see how it turned out! DecoArt Ready to Pour paints and mediums make this an easy project to be successful at. The hardest part is waiting for the paint to dry!

Here’s what you will need to Paint Pour:

This Pouring Medium from DecoArt is the awesome-sauce magic that makes this a fun and NOT MESSY project to undertake.  No need to add anything else besides paint!

Here’s how to make the USA Flag Inspired Decor:

STEP ONE – Protect the Workspace

Layout a protective surface on your work table.  I use kitchen garbage bags.  Raise both the USA wooden plaque and the piece of Chipboard on four small plastic cups each, turned upside down.  This will allow the excess paint to drip off the edges.

STEP TWO – Mix the Paints

To begin the Paint Pour American Flag Plaque, set out four small plastic cups and mix the following in a 1:1 (pouring medium to paint ratio).  The red cup with Tuscan Red and Ruby.  The cup with Bright Blue and Deep Sapphire.  The white cup with Titanium White paint.  The pearl cup with Pearl paint.  Mix each cup with a separate wooden craft stick until well blended.

STEP THREE – Pour the Stripes

Pour 3/4 of the contents of the red cup over the USA Wooden Plaque, spreading the paint pour across the entire surface with the craft stick.

Pour stripes of Titanium White across the red base.  Set aside the excess for Step Four.

Pour stripes of Pearl across the red and white base.  Set aside the excess for Step Four. Allow the paints to blend and mix.  Add additional stripes of red into the white, if necessary.  After approximately 30 minutes, wipe the edges of the USA Wooden Plaque with a clean craft stick to remove excess paint drips.

STEP FOUR – Pour the Stars

Pour 3/4 of the contents of the blue cup over the 3″ by 5″ piece of Chipboard, spreading the paint pour across the entire surface with the craft stick.

Drip dots of white and pearl onto the blue base.

Using the craft stick, splatter dots of white and pearl onto the blue base. Allow the paints to blend and mix.  Add additional dots of blue into the white, if necessary.  After approximately 30 minutes, wipe the edges of the Chipboard with a clean craft stick to remove excess paint drips.

STEP FIVE – Patience!

This is the HARDEST STEP!  Set both pieces aside to dry.

NOTE:  Don’t ask me how I know this, but if you have animals, especially cats in your home, make sure to close the door to the room you are working in or cover your paint pour project with a large plastic tote to protect it from footprints and fur.  LOL! 🙂

STEP SIX – Create the Flag

Once completely dry, lightly sand any rough edges of the USA Wooden Plaque and the Chipboard with a sanding block.  Place the Chipboard rectangle under the Northwest coast of the USA Wooden Plaque and trace the edge with a pencil.  Trim the excess chipboard with scissors and then glue the star field to the stripes with glue.  Once the glue is dry, paint the edges of the wooden plaque with Tuscan Red.

Easy Paint Pouring American Flag Plaque

Paint pouring is a fun and relaxing craft project producing tons of OOHS and AAHS along the way as the paints blend and mix to reveal the final finished project.  No two paint pours will ever be the same! I love that all of these supplies are easy to find in the craft store, on Amazon, and on the Shop DecoArt website. Since I created this project, DecoArt has developed Ready to Pour Paint Colors that are pre-mixed with pouring medium and pigment.
