Monograms continue to be very popular and trendy, so when I came across this Paper Mache letter W in my craft stash, it made me wonder what I could cover it with. Flash forward to the next morning and the light bulb moment when I threw the change from my coffee stop in the cup holder – PENNIES! So, I created the Easiest Recycled Penny Monogram project and turned it into this tutorial. What an outstanding way to test the Tombow Adhesives that I LOVE! I have followed the Penny trend for some time on Pinterest but never knew how to incorporate them into my crafting. And I have PLENTY of pennies to go around!
I love recycling and upcycling everything and I have bins full of treasure to prove it! Creating a piece that no one realizes has been made with recycled pieces and parts is my favorite. From recycling bin junk to cherished keepsake. SCORE!

Here's what you will need to create the Easiest Recycled Penny Monogram:
- Paper Mache Monogram Letter
- DecoArt Dazzling Metallics Worn Penny
- MONO Aqua Liquid Glue from Tombow USA
- Recycled Pennies – get out those loose change jars!
- Paintbrush – 1/4″ Flat
Here’s how to make a Monogram with Recycled Pennies:
STEP ONE
To start the easiest recycled penny monogram, basecoat the paper mache letter with Americana Paint by DecoArt Dazzling Metallics Worn Penny and then let dry. Apply a second coat, if necessary.
STEP TWO
Starting with the sides, apply Tombow MONO Aqua Liquid Glue spacing the pennies evenly as you fill in the shape of the letter. Let each glued surface dry completely before you move on to the next side. TIP: This is the point where you can have multiple monograms being glued at the same time.
STEP THREE
Finish the easiest recycled penny monogram by attaching the pennies to the front, let dry. My monogram just happens to be the right size to fit all of the pennies without leaving any gaps or overlays – PERFECT!
