Hand Embroidery Stitches for a Kitchen Towel

Sharing is caring!

Create beautiful Hand Embroidery Stitches for a Flour Sack Kitchen Towel. Make easy work of intricate embroidery patterns with StitchnSew Foundation Piecing Stabilizer from one of my favorite companies, Therm-O-Web. It is a magical (to me) transparent non-woven material that can be printed, traced, or drawn on directly. Once the embroidery is complete, gently tear the extra stabilizer away from the stitches. I have included the Free Printable Kitchenaid Mixer Pattern that I embroidered, so scroll down and I will show you how easy it really is!

Here's what you need to make an Embroidered Flour Sack Towel:

Here's how to create Embroidered Flour Sack Kitchen Towels:

STEP ONE

To begin Hand Embroidery Stitches for a Kitchen Towel, gather all supplies. StitchnSew Foundation Piecing Stabilizer Sheets provide support and are easily removed by tearing away, up to the stitches, without distorting the embroidery. Very soft and gentle against the skin. You can print directly on the sheets with a laser printer or inkjet printer. Draw or trace on the stabilizer sheets with a permanent marker, like the MONO Twin from Tombow. I always read the directions when working with a new to me product.

STEP TWO

Download the KITCHEN MIXER PATTERN below ⇓ Remove a sheet of StitchnSew Foundation Piecing Stabilizer from the package and either load it into your printer and print the design on it OR print on plain paper and trace the design with a permanent marker. My favorite is the MONO Twin because it has a larger bullet tip and a smaller extra fine tip. Cut out the design with scissors. Place the section of flour sack towel that you would like to embroider into a hoop and position the design on top.

STEP THREE

Thread 0185 Sea Green Light onto an embroidery needle, and satin stitch the base of the mixer. Using horizontal satin stitches, fill in the standing part of the mixer. Continue to fill in the kitchen mixer with a variety of vertical and horizontal satin stitches to create interest. Make sure to knot all of the thread ends securely on the back of your kitchen towel, so the design doesn't unravel during washing.

STEP FOUR

Using 0398 Grey continue filling in the kitchen mixer embroidery pattern with a variety of horizontal and vertical satin stitches. I love the shadows and highlights that are created by varying the direction of the stitches.

STEP FIVE

Once the Grey and Sea Green Light areas have been embroidered, gently pull the StitchnSew Foundation Piecing Stabilizer away from the edge of the stitches. I found it easiest to hold the edge of the stitches with a finger while pulling the stabilizer away with the other hand. Take your time and move carefully. Trim any super small areas with detail scissors, making sure not to cut through your stitches.

STEP SIX

Thread an embroidery needle with 0236 Charcoal Grey Dark and add the details using straight satin stitches and half a dozen french knots. Using the pattern for placement, backstitch a heart on the bowl of the kitchen mixer with 0047 Carmine Red embroidery floss. Take the kitchen towel out of the hoop. Press gently with a steam iron to remove any wrinkles.

The StitchnSew Foundation Piecing Stabilizer from Therm-O-Web allows any design to be easily transferred onto any surface for embroidery. It also provides a stable base for any fabric surface, giving the embroidered design added structure. Since I love to doodle and draw, I can't wait to use this magical stabilizer for a ton of additional projects, so stay tuned!

And are you ready for no more tangled skeins and floss that stays neat and tidy? I love when new products come onto the craft scene that changes the way I create. I was super excited to receive the new Anchor® Embroidery Floss Spools. The floss rolls smoothly off the spool and doesn’t tangle or knot when pulling out a length to work with. Storage is neat and tidy with spools, no more piles of tangled floss.
