Here's what you need to make a Book Stack with a Custom Message:
- Hardcover Books, Three – Dollar Store
- Natural Jute Twine – Dollar Store
- Hemp Cord Red and Hemp Cord Blue – Hemptique
- Americana Acrylic Paint by DecoArt – Titanium White, Bleached Sand, Slate Grey, Red Alert, Sapphire
- Alphabet Stamps – Upper and Lower Case
- Archival Ink Pad, Jet Black
- Paintbrush – DecoArt Decor 1″ Flat
- Scissors – I love my Fiskars!
Here's how to create a Stars and Stripes Forever Book Stack:
STEP ONE
To begin the Dollar Tree Patriotic Book Stack, gather all supplies. Remove the paper dust covers and basecoat the canvas covers of the books with a mixture of Titanium and Bleached Sand acrylic paint. Don’t over mix the colors and let the basecoat be rough, so the dark base is visible through the paint. Set aside to dry.
STEP TWO
Dry brush Slate Grey acrylic paint around the sides and edges of all three books, in places that wear, would naturally occur. To apply a dry brush technique, dip a clean, dry paintbrush in paint, dab some paint off on a paper towel, and then apply to the object. This will give you random and streaky brush strokes. Set aside to dry.
STEP THREE
Paint the paper edges of the first book with Red Alert acrylic paint. Stand the book up on end with the covers open slightly, but with all the pages together. Paint the paper edges of the third book with Sapphire acrylic paint. Set aside to dry. Stack books red, then white, then blue.
STEP FOUR
Using both the upper- and lower-case alphabet stamps, select the message STARS & STRIPES FOREVER. Place the books' spine up, tap each letter stamp in the ink pad, and stamp on the spine. The irregularity of the stamped letters gives the project farmhouse charm. I like to use Archival Ink Pads for craft projects becasue the ink is permanent and smudge-proof on many surfaces.
STEP FIVE
Stack the books together and wrap with natural twine, red hemp cord, and blue hemp cord 10 to 12 times, securing the end with a knot and leaving the tails long. Create a bow, by wrapping the natural twine, red hemp cord, and blue hemp cord around your hand 10 to 12 times, trim the end, and place it in the center of the book stack. To finish the Dollar Tree Patriotic Book Stack, secure the bow in place by knotting the tails around the center of the loops of twine. Trim any excess with scissors.
