Wooden Mason Jar Sign with a Hand Lettered Message

Sharing is caring!

Mason jars are fun for Summer decorating and are so on-trend. This Wooden Mason Jar Sign with a Hand Lettered Message is the perfect accent on a front door or gate and uses a few traditional supplies from one of my favorite companies, Tombow USA, in unique ways to create a fun piece of home decor.

Here's what you need to Hand Letter a Wooden Sign:

.

Here's how to create a Hand Lettered Mason Jar:

STEP ONE

To begin the Wooden Mason Jar Sign, gather all supplies. I love all things mason jar, so this wooden sign from Walnut Hollow is totally me.  The mason jar is one of my favorite elements to design and create with, and so trendy.  Tombow Dual Brush Pens are my first secret. Use them to paint, actually stain, the unfinished wooden mason jar shape with Greys N60 and N90 for the lid and Blues 451 and 452 for the glass part of the jar. Now, don't use brand new Dual Brush Pens for this step, but rather the other ones where the brush tip is no longer at a sharp point. Apply color using the side of the brush tip to large areas and the bullet tip for the details.

STEP TWO

Blend the Dual Brush Pen marker strokes with a baby wipe and the wood grain really shows through.  To make the wood look like glass, apply a generous amount of my favorite, MONO Aqua Liquid Glue, to the surface of the mason jar.  Spread evenly with an old paintbrush and allow to dry completely. See the translucent sheen?  It looks just like glass!  I just love it when a spark of an idea transforms into a wonderfully executed design.  (insert happy dance!)

STEP THREE

Trace the wooden mason jar shape onto plain white paper with a Tombow MONO Drawing Pencil 3H grade, then sketch in the message.  Home Sweet Home because it matches the homey feel of the mason jar.  I always ink in my lettering, so I can make sure that I am pleased with the composition and style combinations.  Flip the sketch over and rub MONO Drawing Pencil 4B grade on the back of the lettering.  Realign the sketch on the wooden mason jar and trace the lettering with a ballpoint pen.  I think that a ballpoint pen provides a firm broad stroke which makes the transfer quick and easy.  Ink in the lettering with the broad tip of the MONO Twin Permanent Marker. Add the broad downstrokes to the word SWEET, then add horizontal lines to the left side of the words HOME with the fine tip of the MONOTWIN.

STEP FOUR

Embellish the Wooden Mason Jar Sign with watercolor flowers.  Start with plain white paper flowers placed on top of an old towel, scribble randomly on the flowers with bright colors of Dual Brush Pens, then spray with the Tombow Mister and watch the magic happen.  The colors blend and mix to create the most vibrantly gorgeous flowers! Layer the pink, yellow, and orange flowers and attach them with Tombow Adhesive Dots. Finish the flower centers with colored, self-adhesive half pearls. Create a decorative bow using a wider pink satin ribbon and a narrow orange gingham ribbon, layer and attach with Tombow Adhesive Dots.  Wrap the mason jar lid with a 24-inch piece of craft wire to use as a hanger and ENJOY.
