Wooden Bead Calico Corn
STEP ONE
Gather all supplies. Each ear of multi-color harvest corn will require approximately 112 wooden beads. Place 24 wooden beads in each of two zip-top bags. Place 12 wooden beads in each of three zip-top bags. Leave the remaining 28 beads natural.
In the first bag of 12 wooden beads, squeeze a small amount of Dark Chocolate acrylic craft paint, and add a few drops of water. The paint and water mixture on the raw wood will act like a dye or stain and provide a hint of color. I love Americana Acrylics from DecoArt because they have one-coat coverage on most surfaces.
Remove the air from the bag and zip it closed. Squish and smush the bag so all of the beads are coated in the paint and water mixture. Repeat this step with the second and third bags of 12 wooden beads, using Burnt Orange and Deep Burgundy acrylic craft paints. Continue with the first and second bags of 24 wooden beads with the Mustard Seed and Deep Ochre craft paints.
Place five sections of layered paper towels on your work surface. Carefully open each zip-top bag and lay the colored wooden beads out to dry. Since water has been added to the paint, allow them to dry overnight or at least 4 – 8 hours.
STEP TWO
Bend four 12” tan chenille stems in half. The fuzzy part of the chenille stem will hold the beads in place better than plain wire. The Dollar Tree craft section is perfect for finding good-quality arts and crafts supplies and getting creative!
Wrap and twist each chenille stem around the others at the center point until you have a rough star shape. Any yellow, or light-colored chenille stems will work.
STEP THREE
In random order, thread 14 of the natural and colored wooden beads onto each of the eight lengths of the chenille stems.
Place your index finger in the center of the wooden bead star, then carefully gather the ends together to create a cylinder shape.
Twist the exposed ends of the chenille stems together to secure the top of the wooden bead harvest corn.
STEP FOUR
Using scissors cut the entire raffia bundle at the first bend (approximately 8″ long). Dollar Tree has such a HUGE selection of materials that can be upcycled and good quality craft supplies that won’t blow your budget!
Wrap the bundle of raffia with natural jute twine approximately one inch from the cut end. Secure the twine with a knot and trim any long ends with scissors.
Attach the raffia corn husks to the top of the harvest corn with a glue gun and glue sticks. Secure any stray raffia with additional glue. You can use liquid craft glue for this project, but you will have to wait for it to dry.
STEP FIVE
Tie a 12″ length of gingham ribbon in a bow, and notch the ends with scissors to prevent fraying. Attach the bow to the calico corn with a glue gun and glue sticks.
