Y’all know that I just LOVE sharing my creativity, so when my favorite company Tombow USA reached out and asked me to teach a national online class for Michael’s (yes, THAT Michael’s) I was excited, thrilled, and beyond words! Today I had the opportunity to teach a bunch of folks How to Watercolor Floral and Butterfly Printables with Dual Brush Pens. Watercolor Free Floral and Butterfly Printables

• Water
• Condiment Container from Dollar Tree
• Paper Towel
• Cricut BrightPad (for tracing)
• Paper Trimmer
• Heat It Craft Tool from Ranger
• Computer and Printer – I love my Canon Laser Printer!
• Plain Paper

Here's how to Watercolor Floral and Butterfly Printables:

NOTE ON PENS:

The Tombow Watercolor Set includes five blendable Dual Brush Pens (885, 993, 249, 526, 757), MONOTWIN Permanent Marker, Blending Palette, MONO Drawing Pencil 4H grade, MONO Eraser, plus instructions. Any water-based markers and/or pens can be used to successfully complete this tutorial, even the kiddos washable markers will work. Tombow Dual Brush Pens are my go-to for watercolor, but you can also use watercolors in tube, pencil, or pot form. Always complete the color blending chart prior to watercoloring your image for the best results.

NOTE ON PAPER:

Any mixed media or watercolor paper will work with this tutorial, but I love the quality that Strathmore watercolor Paper provides. Use the brand and weight that you have on hand. When printing the Floral Globe image directly on mixed media or watercolor paper you must use a laser printer, as an inkjet printed image will bleed once water is added. I always print my image on regular printer paper and trace the image onto mixed media or watercolor paper with my Tombow MONOTWIN Permanent Marker, but any permanent marker will work. For tracing, I use a Cricut BrightPad, but you can tape your images to a sunny window and then trace.

Be creative and resourceful, using the supplies YOU have on hand in your craft stash. The most important part of this FREE Floral Globe Printable tutorial is to HAVE FUN CREATING!

Color Blending Chart

Completing a color blending chart can be a bit time-consuming, but I find it to be the most important part of any coloring process. Use my download above or create one of your own from watercolor paper, a MONOTWIN Permanent Marker, and a ruler. Begin by adding color from each Tombow Dual Brush Pen where the numbers intersect and then blend with the Water Brush included in the Watercolor Set. Apply the solid color along the diagonal and blend with the Water Brush.

Add two-thirds of the horizontal color to each rectangle in that row, then add one-third of the vertical color. Blend each rectangle carefully with the Water Brush. Apply color directly from each pen into the gradient wash area and then blend in an ombre effect with the water brush. This exercise allows you to see the full potential of each color. If you are an impatient crafter like I am, use a Heat It Craft Tool to dry each section of watercolor before moving on to the next set of colors.

Watercolor the Floral Printable

To begin the FREE Floral Printable, apply colors to the blending palette. Pick up the colors with the Water Brush and then apply the color directly to the flowers and leaves. Squeeze gently on the flat areas of the water brush barrel and blend the colors together to create each flower. Don’t overwork the colors, so they retain their individuality.

Watercolor the Butterfly Printable

To create the FREE Butterfly Printable, place colors on the Blending Palette with the brush tip of the Dual Brush Pen.  Add water and pick up the color with the medium round Water Brush, and paint the image while squeezing gently on the barrel.  Continue to paint the image, adding more water to create an ombre effect.  While still wet, push a drop of water from the Water Brush to create organic mixing of the colors.  When dry, push a drop of water from the Water Brush to create a highlight.  Mix, blend and add water to create a variety of colors from a limited palette.
