Here's how to create a Pirate Compass from Recycled Lids
STEP ONE
To begin the Mason Jar Lid Pirate Compass, gather all supplies. Remove lids and cuffs then set mason jars aside. Download and print the Pirate Compass Pattern from the bottom of this post. Trace the mason jar lid onto the compass pattern with a pencil and then cut it out with scissors.
Secure the lid inside the cuff with a glue gun and glue sticks. You can also use liquid craft glue, but you will have to wait for the glue to dry. Dollar Tree has such a HUGE selection of materials that can be upcycled and good quality craft supplies which won’t blow your budget!
STEP TWO
Color the compass pattern with washable markers. We used blue and brown. Open both legs of the metal brad until flat.
Place a self-adhesive rhinestone in the center of the compass pattern. Attach the metal brad to the top of the rhinestone with a glue gun. Insert the compass pattern into one mason jar lid and secure it with a glue gun and glue sticks.
STEP THREE
Cut a two-inch section of grosgrain ribbon, fold one-half inch over on each end, and secure it with a glue gun and glue sticks.
Stack lids on top of each other and glue the ribbon to the back center to create a hinge.
Open the compass and paint the top inside of the lid with black craft paint or cover it with a scrap of black paper.
STEP FOUR
Remove the shank (the loop on the back) from the back of the fancy button with wire cutters. Glue it to the top center of the compass lid. If your mason jar lids and buttons are not already gold, then basecoat the entire outside of the compass with Glorious Gold metallic craft paint.
STEP FIVE
Once the gold basecoat is dry, apply a messy topcoat of Lamp Black acrylic craft paint and immediately wipe off the excess with a paper towel. This will allow the black paint to settle in the cracks and crevasses and give the compass an aged appearance. I love Americana Acrylics from DecoArt because they have one-coat coverage on most surfaces.
To finish, wrap the top and bottom edges of the compass with natural jute twine, securing it with a glue gun and glue sticks.
