Ombre Felt Fringed Heart a DIY for Valentine’s Day
I am not a trendy person, but I do like to follow trends and incorporate them into my crafting projects. Ombre and fringe have been trending for a while now and who doesn't LOVE a heart (pun intended)! Scroll down to see how I have created an Ombre Felt Fringed Heart for Valentine's Day with simple supplies and a recycled cardboard box.

Here's what you need to make a DIY Fringed Heart:
- Kunin® Classic Felt™ 9” x 12” Craft Cuts – Baby Pink, Candy Pink, Shocking Pink, Fuchsia, Red (one of each).
- Beacon Adhesives Felt Glue
- Americana Acrylic Paint by DecoArt in Bubblegum Pink
- MONO J Drawing Pencil by Tombow
- Tombow MONOTWIN Permanent Marker
- Scissors – I love my Fiskars!
- Paint Brush 1” flat wash
- Ruler
- Craft Knife
- Self-Healing Mat
- Scrap Paper 12” by 12” (I used a poster board that I had on hand)
- Corrugated Cardboard 12” by 12” – Recycled
- Ribbon – Red with White Polka Dots
Here's how to create a Valentine Heart from Felt:
STEP ONE
Draw a large heart shape onto scrap paper or poster board, making sure to keep the width at 12” maximum. Cut out with scissors and trace onto corrugated cardboard with a pencil, then cut out again with a craft knife on a self-healing mat, which will prevent the cardboard from getting creased. Basecoat both sides and the edges of the cardboard with Bubblegum Pink acrylic craft paint let dry, and apply a second coat, if necessary.
TIP: Remember, the easiest way to make sure your heart is even is to fold your scrap paper in half!

STEP TWO
Measure and cut two 2” wide by 12” long stripes of Kunin® Classic Felt™ from Baby Pink, Candy Pink, Shocking Pink, Fuchsia, and Red. Lightly mark a 1” horizontal line through the center of each strip. Fringe each felt strip to that 1” mark with scissors.
TIP: When using a permanent marker like the MONOTWIN to measure on to felt, cut inside the lines so you end up with a neat and clean finished product.

STEP THREE
Once fringed, dry fit all felt strips according to the photo. Cut one last strip 1” wide by 12” long from Kunin® Classic Felt™ Baby Pink and fringe with scissors, stopping at ¼” from the top edge. This section will be placed at the very top of the heart to finish the fringed effect.

STEP FOUR
Cut one of the Red Felt strips in half (creating two 6” lengths) and then line up that first 6” strip at the bottom of the fringed edge with the point at the bottom of the heart. Lightly draw a line with a pencil, remove felt, apply Beacon Felt Glue and attach felt. Repeat with each strip of felt from darkest to lightest. Place a heavy object, such as a book, on top of the project until dry.

STEP FIVE
Once dry, flip the heart over and trim the excess felt with scissors. Cut a 24” length of red ribbon and attach to the back of the heart with Beacon Felt Glue, let dry. Tie a 12″ length of red ribbon in a bow and glue to the top right side of the heart. I prefer my Ombre Felt Fringed Heart to be clean and simple, but you can always embellish yours with pearls, rhinestones, or sequins if you like the BLING!
