How do you make a Watermelon Purse from Felt?
STEP ONE
To begin the No-Sew Watermelon Purse, gather all supplies. Download, print and cut out the WATERMELON PURSE PATTERNS below. Trace the base pattern onto a sheet of Kelly Green Kunin Classic Felt, 9″ x 12″ Craft Cuts that has been folded in half, using the MONO Twin Permanent Marker. I love drawing and tracing with the MONO Twin Permanent Marker from Tombow because it has a large bullet tip and a small extra fine tip.
STEP TWO
Cut out the watermelon base with pinking shears for fabric along the cut lines leaving the fold intact.
You will end up with an hourglass style shape, that leaves the fold intact to become the bottom of the purse/bag.
STEP THREE
Attach the sides of the watermelon base with E6000 Fabri-Fuse Liquid Fabric Glue. Set aside to allow glue to dry.
STEP FOUR
Glue green rick rack around the outside edge of the watermelon to mimick the markings on the skin. E6000 Fabri-fuse liquid fabric glue is extremely flexible, has stretch, won’t create bumps or bulges, and allows the felt to remain pliable — even after washing.
STEP FIVE
Trace the watermelon rind pattern onto Apple Green Kunin Classic Felt, 9″ x 12″ Craft Cuts and then cut out with scissors.
Attach the watermelon rind to the base with Fabri-Fuse. Set aside to allow glue to dry.
STEP SIX
Trace the watermelon fruit pattern onto Shocking Pink Kunin Classic Felt, 9″ x 12″ Craft Cuts and then cut out with scissors.
Attach the Shocking Pink watermelon fruit pattern to the rind with Fabri-Fuse. Set aside to allow glue to dry.
STEP SEVEN
Select approximately 12 black buttons in various shapes and sizes to become the watermelon seeds. Attach the buttons to the watermelon with E6000 Fabri-Fuse Liquid Fabric Glue.
STEP EIGHT
Measure and cut a 48″ length of green grosgrain ribbon. I wanted the purse to be a cross body, so I made the strap long, but you can make it any length you like.
Attach each end to the inside top edge of the watermelon purse. This will become the strap or handle of the bag. Grosgrain ribbon is the perfect material for the strap of this purse because it is heavy duty.
