Lunar New Year is the beginning of a new year based on lunar calendars or, informally but more widely, lunisolar calendars. Lunar calendars follow the lunar phase while lunisolar calendars follow both the lunar phase and the time of the solar year. The event is celebrated by numerous cultures in various ways on diverse dates.
January’s new moon will signal the beginning of the Lunar New Year also called Chinese New Year. This 15-day celebration is based on the traditional Chinese lunisolar calendar, which uses the moon's phases and the Earth's orbit around the sun.

The download link for Lunar New Year fun digital files will include two PDF files with the coloring pages. You will need to provide your email address. Due to the instant downloadable nature of this item, you will receive no physical items. The easy way is to download the document, open it using your own computer, and print it. I love my Canon TS9521C Inkjet Printer for its vibrant colors and the ability to print on cardstock.
If you don’t have a printer at home, you can save the file and take it to a local copy or print shop.
I recommend printing these free pages to color on card stock, as it creates a much more durable surface. The right way to print is to be sure to select “fit” instead of “actual” in your printing options panel to ensure your printer doesn’t cut off the edges of the files.

The Chinese zodiac features a 12-year cycle of animals. Each zodiac year also incorporates one of five elements—wood, fire, Earth, metal, or water—creating a 60-year cycle. So, while the animal repeats every 12 years, the animal and the element together repeat only every 60 years. For example, the last Year of the Wood Snake was in 1965.
Lunar New Year Printable
Chinese Lunar New Year, also called Spring Festival, is one of the most significant celebrations in China and is observed by millions of people worldwide. This 15-day festival begins with the first New Moon of the lunar calendar and ends with the Lantern Festival on the Full Moon.
A new moon occurs when the moon is roughly between the Earth and the sun, so it’s lost in the star’s glare from the Earth's point of view. Lunar New Year is celebrated each year to mark a new calendar year. The date changes yearly as the lunar (moon) phases determine it.
