How to Make a Whimsical Embroidery Hoop Jack-O-Lantern

Do you remember felt boards or am I just dating myself? LOL! I had one that was a doll with interchangeable clothes and hats which I thought was very fancy. But felt boards of all kinds were very big when I was a kid in the seventies. Halloween is just around the corner, so I created a Whimsical Embroidery Hoop Jack-O-Lantern with interchangeable features to swap out during the season. This updated version of a felt board is a fun project to create in an afternoon with the kiddos, then change it up daily to suit your mood! I've included a FREE Printable Pattern Sheet to make it even easier to create!

Create a Whimsical Embroidery Hoop Jack-O-Lantern for Halloween

Here's what you need to make a Jack-O-Lantern Embroidery Hoop:

• Kunin Classics™ Felt 9” x 12” Craft Cuts – Pirate Green, Walnut Brown, Olive (1 each)
• Americana Acrylic by DecoArt – Dark Chocolate
• Kunin Premium™ 9” x 12” Craft Cuts – Black (3 each)      
• Kunin Classics™ Felt Yardage – Orange (1/2 yard)
• Wooden Embroidery Hoop – 14” diameter
• Ribbons – Green, variety of colors and styles – 12” lengths
• Scissors – I love my Fiskars!
• Fabri-Fuse Liquid Fabric Glue from E6000
• Aquarelleable White Pencil from Stabilo
• MONOTWIN Permanent Marker from Tombow
• Hot Glue Gun and Glue Sticks
• Paint Brush
• Plain Paper
• Pencil

Here's how to create an Interchangeable Jack-O-Lantern:

STEP ONE

To begin an Embroidery Hoop Jack-O-Lantern, gather all supplies. Paint the outside and top edge of the outside ring of the embroidery hoop with Americana Dark Chocolate. DecoArt paints are rich, thick, and provide one-coat coverage.  Set aside to dry.

STEP TWO

Fit the Orange Kunin Classics™ Felt Yardage loosely into the embroidery hoop.  Pull felt gently from the back to ensure the Felt is taught and then tighten the screw at the top of the hoop. Trim the excess Orange Felt from the back of the embroidery hoop with scissors. I love my Fiskars Mixed Media Scissors for easily cutting through bulky materials. Apply a thin line of Fabri-Fuse Liquid Fabric Glue to the cut edge of the Felt to secure.  Set aside to dry.

STEP THREE

Download, print, and cut out the Jack-O-Lantern Features FREE Patterns below ⇓ Have the kiddos help with this step to personalize your Jack-O-Lantern!  Cut out the patterns, trace them onto the Black felt with a white pencil or MONOTWIN Permanent Marker, and then cut out with scissors.  This works great for the larger and smaller features. TIP:  Make sure to cut on the INSIDE edge of the traced line so that you have clean, finished features since the eyes, noses, and mouths are reversible.

STEP FOUR

I created four sets of features – four pairs of eyes, four noses, and four mouths – for variety. But this is the perfect time to personalize your whimsical embroidery hoop Jack-O-Lantern with features you create with your kiddos. Get creative and have FUN!

STEP FIVE

Trace the pumpkin stem onto Walnut Brown Felt twice and the leaves onto Pirate Green and Olive Felt with the MONOTWIN Permanent Marker, then cut out. Cut 12” lengths of five to six different green ribbons and then tie in a loose knot to the screw at the top of the embroidery hoop.  Attach stems together with hot glue and then adhere to the back top of the hoop.  Apply a half-inch bead of hot glue to the base of each leaf and fold in half to create dimension.  To finish the whimsical embroidery hoop Jack-O-Lantern, glue leaves to either side of the screw at the top of the hoop.

Interchangeable Features makes a Whimsical Embroidery Hoop Jack-O-Lantern

The rough texture of the felt layers will allow the Whimsical Embroidery Hoop Jack-O-Lantern black features to magically stick to the orange pumpkin base. No glue needed here. This makes changing out the eyes, noses, and mouths on a daily basis quick, easy, and FUN for the adults as well as the kiddos!
