Dollar Tree Gnome Scarecrow
STEP ONE
Gather all supplies. Cut approximately 30 individual strings from the cotton mop head with scissors. Dollar Tree has such a HUGE selection of materials that can be upcycled and good quality craft supplies that won’t blow your budget!
Get the cut mop strings damp under running water, squeeze the excess water out, and place them in a gallon zipper bag. Squeeze Deep Ochre acrylic craft paint into the bag, then zip it closed.
Squish the Deep Ochre acrylic craft paint into the damp cotton mop strings through the plastic zipper bag until they are all coated.
Turn out the Deep Ochre mop strings onto a piece of aluminum foil, line up straight, and set aside to dry. The paint will stiffen the mop strings, so make sure they are straight during the drying process. Turn the plastic zipper bag inside out and use it as a glove to keep your hands clean.
STEP TWO
To create the hat, measure six jumbo craft sticks to four-inches long, and then cut with scissors.
Using scissors, trim additional jumbo craft sticks to the width of the hat and attach them with a glue gun and glue sticks. Flip the hat over and attach one full craft stick to the base as the hat brim. You can use liquid craft glue for this project, but you will have to wait for it to dry.
STEP THREE
Basecoat the entire hat with Honey Brown acrylic craft paint. Let dry, and apply a second coat, if necessary. I love Americana Acrylics from DecoArt because they have one-coat coverage on most surfaces.
Dry brush Milk Chocolate acrylic craft paint in a cross-hatch pattern to resemble burlap. Let dry. To dry brush dip a dry paintbrush into the paint and gently drag across the surface horizontally and vertically.
STEP FOUR
Flip the hat over and attach 15 cotton mop strings along the bottom edge of the craft sticks with a glue gun and glue sticks.
Attach 15 additional painted cotton mop strings on a second layer with a glue gun and glue sticks. Glue the strings tightly together to make the gnome's beard full.
STEP FIVE
Glue the wooden ball to the top center of the scarecrow’s beard, just under the hat brim.
STEP SIX
To finish, tie a green gingham ribbon in a bow and glue a sunflower to the center. Attach the flower and bow to the scarecrow’s hat with a glue gun and glue sticks.
Cut a scrap of orange gingham ribbon in a square, glue it to the hat, and draw stitches with the MONO Twin permanent black marker. Thread natural jute twine through a brown button, tie it with a knot and glue it to the scarecrow’s hat to finish. I love drawing and tracing with the MONO Twin Permanent Marker from Tombow because it has a large bullet tip and a small extra fine tip.
