STEP ONE
Gather all supplies. Remove the paper tag from the clay pot. Basecoat the clay pot with Light Cinnamon acrylic craft paint. Let the paint dry and apply a second coat, if necessary. Dollar Tree has such a HUGE selection of materials that can be upcycled and good quality craft supplies which won’t blow your budget!
STEP TWO
Basecoat the front, back, and sides of jumbo craft sticks with acrylic craft paint as follows: Deep Burgundy (2), Mustard Seed (1), Antique Gold (1), Canyon Orange (1), Burnt Orange (1), and Dark Chocolate (1). Let the paint dry and apply a second coat, if necessary. I love Americana Acrylics from DecoArt because they have one-coat coverage on most surfaces.
Using a ruler, measure each jumbo craft stick in half and mark with a pencil line. Carefully cut the jumbo craft sticks in half with scissors. The younger kids will need help with this step.
STEP THREE
Download, print, and cut out the TURKEY PATTERNS from the bottom of this post. Trace the turkey feather base onto Cocoa Kunin Classic Felt with the MONO Twin permanent black marker. Cut out with scissors inside the traced lines. Kunin Classic Felt comes in 9″ by 12″ Craft Cuts that make all your DIY projects quick and easy since it won't fray when cut.
STEP FOUR
Lay out the half jumbo craft sticks with seven on the bottom layer and six on the top layer. Refer to the photo for placement. Attach the half jumbo craft sticks to the felt base with a glue gun and glue sticks.
Add feather markings to each half craft stick using the MONO Twin permanent black marker. This step could also be completed before gluing. Attach the turkey feathers to the back of the turkey with a glue gun and glue sticks. You could also use liquid craft glue, but you would have to wait for it to dry. I love drawing and tracing with the MONO Twin Permanent Marker from Tombow because it has a large bullet tip and a small extra fine tip.
STEP FIVE
Trace the turkey beak onto Gold Kunin Classic Felt, and the turkey waddle onto Burgundy Kunin Classic Felt with the MONO Twin permanent black marker. Cut out the beak and waddle with scissors.
Add a face to the turkey by attaching two wiggle eyes with a glue gun and glue sticks. Glue the felt waddle and beak directly under the wiggle eyes. Add cheeks by dipping a new pencil eraser in Bubblegum Pink acrylic craft paint and dotting on either side of the face.
Tie black and white gingham ribbon in a bow, and attach it to the base of the clay pot turkey using a glue gun and glue sticks. Cut a triangle out of the edge of both ribbon ends to prevent fraying. Dollar Tree has a variety of gingham ribbons by the spool and I always stock up when I see them!
