Here's what you need to make a Fall Book Stack:

Here's how to create a Book Stack for Fall:

STEP ONE

Gather all supplies.  Select books with black or dark covers.  This will give the finished project more depth.  Remove the paper dust covers and basecoat the canvas covers of the books with a mixture of Titanium White and Bleached Sand acrylic paint.  Don’t over mix the colors and let this basecoat be rough, so the dark base is visible through the paint.  Set aside to dry.

STEP TWO

Dry brush Slate Grey acrylic paint around the sides and edges of the base coated books, in places that wear and tear, would naturally occur.  Set aside to dry. To dry brush, dip the bristles of the paintbrush in paint, pounce most of the paint off on a paper towel and brush paint on without using any water.

STEP THREE

Using both the upper- and lower-case alphabet stamps, select the message HAPPY FALL YALL.  Place all three books spine up, tap each letter stamp in the ink pad, and stamp on the spine.  Leave a bit more space between the Y and A in Y’ALL, so we can add the apostrophe in the next step.  The irregularity of the stamped letters gives the project farmhouse charm. Use letter stickers or hand-letter your book stack message instead of alphabet stamps. Using an archival ink pad gives you a permanent and waterproof stamped image that will not smudge or bleed.

STEP FOUR

Using the bullet tip of the MONOTWIN permanent black marker, add the apostrophe between the Y and A in Y’ALL. I love the MONOTWIN from Tombow because it has a larger bullet tip and a smaller fine tip, all in one marker! When I used the lower and upper case “L” in FALL, it ended up looking like FAIL, so I painted over the lower case “l” and re-stamped it.

STEP FIVE

Stack the three books together and wrap with buffalo check ribbon, securing at the top with a knot and leaving the tails long.  Cut a decorative fishtail at the end of the ribbons with scissors.

STEP SIX

To finish, snip off a section of a small silk flower bunch and two Fall leaves with wire cutters and tuck into the knot. Dollar Tree always has a nice selection of silk flowers, leaves, and berries.

  • I love the book stack idea. I’m thinking instead of painting and stamping directly on the books, why not make book jackets and then it would be really easy to switch what they say for seasons or special occasions.
