Butterfly Watercolor Galaxy with Tombow

Sharing is caring!

I love experimenting with new techniques, especially when they include my favorite Tombow Dual Brush Pens. This Butterfly Watercolor Galaxy with Tombow was from a VIP Club Creativity Kit, but can certainly be completed with just a few Tombow supplies and my tutorial below.

Here's what you need to make a Watercolor Butterfly with Tombow:

Here's how to create a Butterfly Shaped Galaxy:

STEP ONE

My crafty friend Katie Smith @studio.katie was the inspiration and co-creator of this VIP Club Box with Tombow. She is the queen of the watercolor style galaxy, and I am loving the butterfly silhouette version in this creativity kit. To begin the Butterfly Watercolor Galaxy, gather all supplies.

STEP TWO

Sketch or trace the shape of a butterfly onto a piece of watercolor paper with the MONO Drawing Pencil 4H grade. I love Strathmore Watercolor Paper Pads. If you would like the same butterfly I used, the free pattern is available below ⇓. I love to use my Cricut Bright Pad for all of my projects including tracing lettering, elements, and images. The Bright Pad from Cricut has several brightness levels that allow you to trace through cardstock, mixed media, and heavy watercolor papers.

STEP THREE

Use the MONO Glue Pen to draw dots and stars inside of the silhouette shape. Let dry. You can see in the photo below that the MONO Glue Pen writes and dries clear, but with a definite shine. I always tilt my head, so I can see exactly where the dots and stars are positioned. It is also perfect for attaching small embellishments like sequins and rhinestones.

STEP FOUR

Apply jagged lines in areas of color inside the silhouette shape using the Tombow Dual Brush Pens. For simple color blending, keep the lightest color (133) in the center, followed by the mid-tones (452 and 555). Work your way out, using the darkest color (N15) around the outside edges.

STEP FIVE

Apply water to the Dual Brush Pen ink with the medium Water Brush. Start with the lightest colors first, move into the medium colors, and then the darkest colors to blend them all together. Be careful to stay inside the lines of the silhouette shape, and let dry. I love that each time you blend the Dual Brush Pen colors the result is totally unique.

STEP SIX

Once the Dual Brush Pen ink is dry, use the MONO Twin Permanent Marker to outline around the edges of the silhouette shape and draw on the antennae. Use the Blue Fudenosuke Colors Brush Pen to add details inside the galaxy. To finish the Butterfly Watercolor Galaxy, highlight the edges and color transitions, include a hand-lettered message, or add flourishes.
