How to Paint Buffalo Plaid
STEP ONE
Gather all supplies. Basecoat the wooden pumpkin plaque with Buttermilk acrylic craft paint. Let dry and apply a second coat, if necessary. I love Americana Acrylics from DecoArt because they have one-coat coverage on most surfaces.
STEP TWO
Starting in the middle, apply painter’s tape vertically through the center of the pumpkin plaque. Use a small piece of painter’s tape as a spacer and continue applying vertical stripes of painter’s tape out to the right and left edges. Burnish the edges of the tape with a fingernail or bone folder.
NOTE: This is an instance where I do not recommend using a Dollar Tree product. Their Painter's Tape will not give crisp edges and will peel unevenly. Invest in Scotch 3M or Frog Tape for this project.
Apply a light coat of Canyon Orange acrylic craft paint using a dry brush, remove painter’s tape, and set these strips of tape aside to use later. Let the paint dry completely. Don’t worry if your brush strokes show because it adds to the buffalo check effect.
STEP THREE
Starting in the middle, apply painter’s tape horizontally through the center of the pumpkin plaque. Use a small piece of painter’s tape as a spacer and continue applying horizontal stripes of painter’s tape out to the top and bottom edges. Burnish the edges of the tape with a fingernail or bone folder.
Apply a light coat of medium orange craft paint using a dry brush, remove painter’s tape. Let the paint dry completely. Don’t worry if your brush strokes show because it adds to the buffalo check effect.
STEP FOUR
Once dry, apply Burnt Orange acrylic craft paint to each of the square intersections within the buffalo check design. Use a basecoat paintbrush to get straight edges on the squares. Paint the pumpkin stem with Burnt Orange acrylic craft paint. Let all paint dry completely.
STEP FIVE
Measure and cut a 16” length of burlap ribbon, fold the ends to the center to create a loop. Measure and cut a 24” length of natural jute twine. Fold in half and in half again, place on the burlap loop and on a 12” length of natural jute twine. Wrap the jute twine tightly around the center of the ribbon several time, securing with a knot.
Using a glue gun and glue sticks, attach silk leaves to the right and left of the stem of the wooden pumpkin plaque. Cut a 12” length of burlap ribbon, fold it in half, cut notches from the ends, and glue it to the pumpkin stem. Glue the bow on top. You can use liquid craft glue for this project, but you will have to wait for it to dry.
STEP SIX
Remove one of the faux leather words from the package and attach it to the front center of the buffalo plaid pumpkin sign with a glue gun and glue sticks. This package has 2 Grateful and 2 Blessed.
