I always like to experiment and try new creative projects when I travel. Extra time in an airport or on a plane just flies by (pun intended) when working on a new craft project. Kunin Brand Felt Craft Cuts are perfect for travel crafts because they come in a variety of colors, cut easily, and will not fray like traditional fabrics. My Boho Rainbow Embroidery Hoop with Kunin Felt is a bright and colorful project that can be completed on the go!

I recently had the opportunity to travel outside Austin, Texas with my crafty besties Laura Kelly Designs and Ann Butler Designs to host our second Team Creative Crafts Craft-A-Thon, the Travel Edition. We created these fun embroidery hoop projects with our favorite colors of Kunin Brand Felt under the open-air pavilion of the Gruene Mansion Inn. It was a blast. Check out the FB Live video for all of the details!

Here's how to Travel with Embroidery:
STEP ONE
To begin the Boho Rainbow Embroidery Hoop, gather all supplies. Download and print the BOHO RAINBOW EMBROIDERY HOOP PATTERNS below ⇓ and then cut out all shapes with scissors. This is easy to complete at home before you leave.

STEP TWO
Trace the Boho Rainbow patterns onto your favorite colors of Kunin® Classic™ Felt with the MONOTWIN Permanent Marker and cut out inside the traced lines with scissors. I like vibrant colors for the Rainbow hoop, but pastels or earth tones would work just as well. Trace the hoop back pattern onto a coordinating color of Kunin® Classic™ Felt and cut out with pinking shears for a fun edge design.
STEP THREE
Unscrew the metal bracket at the top of the embroidery hoop and remove the center ring from the outer ring. Lay center hoop down on your work surface, place Kunin® Classic™ Felt on top, and then fit outer hoop over the felt making a sandwich. Tighten the metal screw and pull the Felt gently from the back to get a snug fit. Flip over and trim the Kunin® Classic™ Felt as close as you can to the back of the wooden hoop.
STEP FOUR
Since I will be traveling with this hoop, I want to finish the edges before I leave. Attach ball fringe trim or rick rack trim to the outside edge of the wooden embroidery hoop with E6000 Fabri-Fuse Fabric Glue. Let dry. I love to use ball fringe trim and rick rack on an embroidery hoop because they are both so playful.

STEP FIVE
Perfect to complete in the car. Dry fit and layer the Felt Rainbow patterns on the embroidery hoop. Thread and embroidery needle with six strands of black floss, knot the end, and then cross stitch the largest bow onto the hoop. Apply the second-largest bow to the hoop with a running stitch. Using a variety of designs like a zig-zag stitch, embroider the third bow onto the felt base. Accent the smallest bow with French knots. Mix and match or teach yourself new stitches.

STEP SIX
Once the embroidery is complete, I like to add a small section of white mini ball fringe trim to the base, resembling a cloud. Flip the embroidery hoop over and attach the back felt piece with E6000 Fabri-Fuse Fabric Glue and set it aside to dry. I like to do this in the evening, once I’m settled at the hotel, and then let the glue dry overnight. Fabri-Fuse is great to travel with because it is the perfect fix when you have a hem that falls, a seam rip, or even a loose button.
Quick and Easy Boho Rainbow Embroidery Hoop
Think of this hoop project as an updated sampler and experiment with different embroidery stitches. Or you can make up your own favorite designs as you go. Use one bold color, like black or a variety of colors that match your design for a monochromatic color palette. Using just these five colors, create five different Boho Rainbow Embroidery Hoops by switching up the background and rainbow colors.

The perfect way to get a head start on gifts for the holidays (or any special occasion) while riding in the car or waiting at the airport. I have created additional images of a butterfly and a cactus that are available over on the Kunin Felt Blog as Easy Travel Embroidery Hoops complete with FREE patterns. Or you can design images that speak to you or embodies your travel destination which would make a great keepsake.
