Avocado Floor Cushion Pillow for Back to School

Sharing is caring!

Whether your kiddos are starting Kindergarten or College, this cute and clever Avocado Floor Cushion Pillow will provide a soft landing place for those first days of school. This custom shape was easy to cut out of Poly-Fil® NuFoam™ from Fairfield World and then I used the cushion as a pattern for the quirky and freeform cover. I certainly am getting more comfortable with sewing projects and letting go of perfection.

Here's what you need to make a Shaped Cushion:

.

Here's how to create an Avocado Pillow:

STEP ONE

To begin the Avocado Floor Cushion Pillow, gather all supplies. Roll out the Poly-Fil® NuFoam™ on a large flat work surface like the garage floor, using a flattened cardboard box as protection. I like the roll of Poly-Fil® NuFoam™ two inches thick, but a square cushion would work just as well. Draw an avocado shape on the Poly-Fil® NuFoam™ with the MONOTWIN Permanent Marker.

STEP TWO

Starting with a sharp utility knife, carefully cutting through the Poly-Fil® NuFoam™ one layer at a time. Clean up any roughly cut edges with scissors. I love my Amplify Mixed Media Shears from Fiskars for irregular and bulky materials. Use a shop vac to easily clean up all the stray fibers.

STEP THREE

Wash, dry, and iron all the cotton fabrics prior to sewing. Layout the dark green fabric with right sides together on a flat work surface. Place the avocado shape on top and draw an outline with the MONOTWIN Permanent Marker approximately one inch larger on the wrong side of the fabric. Layout one layer of the light green fabric on the work surface and trace a smaller avocado shape on the wrong side. Draw a large circle on the wrong side of the brown fabric, and then cut out all shapes with scissors.

STEP FOUR

Layer the dark brown fabric pit to the light green avocado center to the dark green fabric avocado skin and attach with straight pins. Applique right sides of pit, center, and skin together with a zig-zag stitch on a sewing machine. I like the contrast of white thread for this project, so the zig-zag stitches can be seen, but you can color coordinate the thread if you prefer.

STEP FIVE

Place right sides of the avocado pattern together and secure with straight pins. Stitch together on a sewing machine, using a one-half-inch seam allowance and leaving a six-inch opening at the base for inserting the Poly-Fil® NuFoam™ cushion. I always use straight pins with a redhead to remind me to stop sewing.

STEP SIX

Turn avocado cushion cover right side out through the space left open in the bottom seam. Roll the Poly-Fil® NuFoam™ avocado-shaped cushion lengthwise and insert it into the cover. To finish the Avocado Floor Cushion Pillow, pin the opening and hand stitch closed with a needle and thread.

Quick and Easy Avocado Floor Cushion Pillow

This quick and easy Poly-Fil® NuFoam™ floor cushion went together in about 30 minutes with limited supplies. My niece Marlee is crazy for everything avocado, so I can't wait to give this to her soon.

Poly-Fil® NuFoam from Fairfield World

Poly-Fil® NuFoam™ is a safe alternative to conventional foam and is made from densified polyester batting. It is mildew resistant, and won’t yellow or disintegrate. It’s perfect for chair cushions, deck furniture, camping, futons, recreational vehicle accessories, and more. Made from compressed layers of 100% polyester that range from 1″ to 4″ thick. I recommend using NuFoam that is 1” thicker than your intended cushion to allow for compression. It will be a snug fit inside the cover. It resists mildew and is non-allergenic.
